How to Spot Solar Scams in DC

How to Spot Solar Scams in DC

If you’ve been researching solar, you may have felt overwhelmed. Right now, the solar market in DC can feel like the Wild West — lots of companies rushing in, not all of them trustworthy. Some are here to do good work, others are only out for a quick profit. So how can you tell who’s honest, and who’s not? Here are the red flags to watch out for.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

Unrealistic Financing Offers
If a salesperson promises an interest rate that looks too good to be true — especially lower than federal benchmarks — there are probably hidden fees built in. In DC, with strong incentives like the federal tax credit and SRECs, many families can pay off a loan quickly. Be wary of financing that front-loads interest or hides the real costs.

Big Promises Without the Numbers
Some sales reps will say solar will cover “100% of your bill” without showing you the math. In reality, your savings depend on roof size, shading, and your actual energy use. A reputable installer will provide a clear calculation or design before making claims.

The Word “Free”
Scammers may tell you the government or Pepco will give you “free solar.” That’s not true. The federal government offers a 30% tax credit, but it doesn’t install panels. Pepco doesn’t install solar either — it only connects your system to the grid. DC does have a Solar for All program for income-qualified households, but that’s separate and run directly through the city. Always verify with official sources.

Pressure to Sign Immediately
If you’re told an offer is only good “today” or you’re pushed to sign before you’re ready, step back. Legitimate companies expect you to take your time, ask questions, and feel comfortable before moving forward.

No Licensed Installer Behind the Sale
Some salespeople don’t actually work for an installation company. They sell contracts and pass them off, often driving up the cost for homeowners. Always ask which company is doing the installation, and make sure they’re licensed and insured. A reputable solar company will handle permitting, inspections, interconnection, installation, and long-term support.

In Agreement with the DC Attorney General

We’re not the only ones raising concerns about predatory practices. DC Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb recently issued a Consumer Alert warning residents about misleading, high-pressure sales tactics that target vulnerable homeowners — including seniors, low-to-moderate income families, and residents who don’t speak English as a first language.

The Attorney General made it clear:

“District residents should be on high alert that some home solar system companies use misleading, high-pressure sales tactics to get them to sign predatory contracts.”

We couldn’t agree more. Like the AG’s office, the Empower Solar Coalition is committed to protecting families from these tactics. No homeowner should ever feel rushed or misled into signing a solar contract.

That’s why we’re working to:

  • Support the Attorney General’s call for stronger consumer protections.
  • Educate homeowners about red flags before they sign anything.
  • Promote vetted local companies that are licensed, insured, and committed for the long term.

What to Look For in a Reputable Solar Company

  • Licensed and insured in DC
  • Transparent about pricing and financing
  • Provides a clear solar design or calculation before making promises
  • Handles permitting, installation, and interconnection directly
  • Available for maintenance and support after installation

Why This Matters

Solar scams don’t just hurt individual families — they damage trust in the entire industry. That’s why the Empower Solar Coalition exists: to help homeowners spot red flags, connect with vetted local installers, and push for stronger consumer protections.

We want to move solar in DC from a confusing marketplace into a trusted community resource. The bottom line: take your time, ask questions, and only work with companies that are licensed, transparent, and committed for the long haul.
