Debunking Common Solar Myths

Thinking about solar but not sure what’s real and what’s not? You’re not alone. At Empower Solar Coalition, we talk with a lot of DC homeowners who have heard the same myths. Let’s clear a few of them up:

Myth: Solar is only for the wealthy
Solar has gotten much more affordable. Prices have dropped and incentives from DC and the federal government cover a big chunk of the cost. If you don’t want to buy panels, there are no-cost programs that let you go solar without paying upfront.

Myth: Solar panels need constant maintenance
Not true. Rain usually keeps panels clean, and warranties cover them for 20–25 years. In many cases, the installer handles any upkeep for you.

Myth: Solar won’t work in DC’s weather
Panels keep producing power even when it’s cloudy or cold. In fact, they often run better on cool sunny days than in extreme heat.

Myth: Solar isn’t reliable
Your home stays connected to Pepco’s grid. That means you’ll always have power, and you can get credits for extra energy your panels send back.

Myth: Solar will damage my roof
Installed correctly, panels actually protect the part of your roof they cover and can help keep your home cooler.

Myth: Solar isn’t really green
It only takes a few years for panels to “pay back” the energy it took to make them. After that, it’s decades of clean energy and lower pollution.
